I don't understand the negative reviews on this place. Yes the rooms are small, but that's been true of every hotel I've stayed in in any major European city! You're not in America, folks. And personally I didn't come to Paris to hang out in my room! This place is a great value, the rooms are clean and well maintained, and the staff to a person have been awesome!! It's in a great neighborhood with lots of wonderful shops and restaurants. Could not recommend it more highly!!!

Small Traditional Hotel near to the Bastille and Père Lachaise Cemetery

We stayed here in July 2023. We didn't like our first room which was very small but we were able to change to a bigger room due to a last minute cancellation and we were given a room in the roof which felt far more traditional (except for the wall art which was for NYC - it should be something local to Paris or France!). There was a little balcony that you could step out onto. There was no air conditioning, only a blower which was better than nothing. There was no safe and no tea/coffee making facilities but there was a hair dryer and some sachets of toiletries. The room was very quiet at night, but because it was the middle of July, it was very very warm and difficult to sleep. The room was cleaned each day and the towels replaced. The young lady on reception (curly hair, glasses) was lovely and very friendly but there was also a grumpy old man on reception! We had breakfast once and it is very basic with bread and croissants, jam etc, but there is a coffee shop within a few feet of the main entrance. The hotel is in a good location near to the Bastille underground and also the Père Lachaise Cemetery which is definitely worth a visit :) Overall we had a good stay and I would recommend this hotel.

We just arrived at the Grand Hotel Novel Opera. We were unsure if it was our hotel because it's raining heavily in Paris, and we had a lot of luggage. When we went to the reception to confirm with the receptionist, she was extremely rude and disrespectful. We've never been treated this way anywhere in the world. She mentioned smelling Brazilians from afar, asked if we couldn't see the hotel name on the doormat and outside. She was rude, kept grumbling and mocking us throughout, treating us very unkindly. Avoid this hotel; they lack respect for people.

After seeing all the negative reviews I was a bit sceptical of what was in store in regards to staff and the rooms on offer. Upon arrival we were greeted a lovely and polite female receptionist. She was very helpful and despite my broken French was a pleasure to deal with. In fact, she was working every day we were there and was always cheerful and smiley the whole time. The night reception staff that we encountered were fine, no one is overly talkative at 2am. Our room was situated on the fourth floor, facing the main road (Ledru Rollin). It was on the small side, but had everything we required, twin beds, a small desk and chair, wardrobe space, fan and a huge window. Continuing the small theme, the bathroom had a shower cubicle, toilet, basin, toiletries, towels and a hairdryer. The shower was on the tight side even for an average build person, so be aware. Everything within the room was clean... Definitely no bed bugs in sight! We slept with the window open both nights as it was very hot in Paris over the time we were there and obviously being on the main road some noise was expected. After a few large beers sleep wasn't much of a problem, but this could irritate some lighter sleepers. Also a side note I'm not sure if there is a police station or someting nearby but there seemed to be a lot of sirens throughout our stay. The area around the hotel is not too bad, and we never felt unsafe when walking back day or night. It felt like a very youthful up and coming area. All said and done, the hotel is a bit on the basic side of things, but the rooms were clean and the staff were amazing, so given the price we paid of around £80 a night for a twin room, I have no complaints!

BEWARE: Grotesque service from staff

My boyfriend and I were just at this hotel for five nights, to say that the experience we faced was an unpleasant one is an understatement. All of said bad experience mainly stems from the grotesque service that was offered by the receptionists, especially from the woman with a mustache and a very nasty attitude as well as this man. On arrival, since we were early and the room was not ready, we were allowed to leave our luggage with them and return when the room is ready to check in. When we arrived for the second time at the hotel, there were a few guests before us being assisted by the aforementioned lady, so we waited behind them for our turn. When she noticed us, without any greeting or welcome, she ordered us to go sit on the lounge, with no explanation or any niceties from her tone. We did as we were told, and whilst we waited, we realised other people came in and she decided to serve them, so I decided to stand up and see what was happening and remind her that we are still here. After dealing with the other guests, she rudely asked us what we wanted, and I responded with our room. We overlooked the rude greeting thinking it was a one interaction however it did not stop there. For some stupid reason, we were told that every time we had to leave the building we had to give them our card key to the receptionist and when we return, supposedly, the receptionist that is meant to be at the desk is to return it to us. On one day when we came back to our hotel at 11 pm, there was no receptionist to be found, we checked everywhere, we called out and got no response back. We were panicked that we were going to be locked out of our room. 25 minutes later the receptionist showed up from upstairs relaxed as ever, and gave us our key. We were so frustrated with the situation, as we were so tired after a long day at Disney that this was the last thing we wanted to happen, and just wanted to go sleep. So we decided that we will keep the key with us to avoid such a situation. Next day when we headed out, the female receptionist mentioned earlier shouted to us to stop and give her the key, to which we refused and explained to her why. In a patronizing voice she said that it wasn't true there wasn't a receptionist, to which I told her she can look at her cameras. She acted in such a disgusting way, I couldn't believe that she was a receptionist in a hotel, as no one should be treated as poorly as we did. She said it was day time and not night time, so we were to give her the card, but she did not understand the fact that we were going to stay out until the night, and we wanted to avoid last night's problem! She had spoken to us in such a belittling manner, to that we couldn't take it anymore, as it was getting worse the situation and we just gave her the key and told her to go where the sun does not shine. Please note this was on my birthday, and to that it was a horrible way to start. That being said, we kept giving them the key during the day but kept it any time we return and go out in the eve, because that is their logic. Except for one time, when this man asked for my name when we asked for the card (for some odd reason), as he did not make any form of check with the card, and just handed it to me. With that being said, when we were meant to go out at night, we were stopped once again for the card, even though the woman with the mustache told us that we can keep it at night. It is a pity that such people have to lower the standards of such a hotel. That being said, on top of the staff being very very poor and have no idea of what it means to work in hospitality, the hotel room was a hole size of a room, with no ac. We were given a fan which we didn't turn on as it was filled with dust and filth. In the hole like bathroom (which is not good for anyone who is 5ft3 upwards) all the pipe work was external and this created a loss of space in said tiny bathroom for movement. For anyone who is looking into this hotel to stay here, don't. There is an ibis nearby, with better service and bigger rooms.
